Religious Architecture

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENIANE KARTCHNER

During the 2021–22 winter holidays, Kate Stewart, President of Weber County Heritage Foundation, came to me with an idea for a project. Why not photograph Ogden’s historic churches? What started out as a fun and informative social media series around Christmas and Hannukah turned into a full-scale project.

From November to February, I photographed eight buildings (seven Christian churches and Jewish synagogue). I shared each detailed gallery with the organization for their own use.

In March, I shared a “Lunch and Learn” presentation at the Golden Hours Senior Center.

In April, the project was featured at Preservation Utah’s annual conference.

In September, the Foundation’s Annual Historic Architecture Tour featured these locations which built connections and renewed community.

In the middle of it all, I recognized an opportunity to gather the history and images into a permanent home and wrote a grant to house the photos in permanent galleries. I am grateful to Weber County R.A.M.P. for funding the creation of this space!
